Drugs in Hair

Drugs become incorporated into the body hair in a quantitative way, and as hair grows, the time - drug intake history, week by week, can be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Courts.

The Answer is in the Hair

Background

The presence of drugs in hair strands is a reliable and sensitive measure of drug use. Drugs become incorporated into the growing part of the hair at the time they are taken. By analysing the hair along its length the history of drug use over time can be determined.

Example 1

In two cases involving Munchausen’s syndrome by proxy, medicines were either withheld or inappropriately given to children - in order to draw attention in some way to one of the parents.

Hair strand analysis identified actual medicine administration to the children.

Example 2

A young male’s tenancy agreement under a County Court judgment required him to be 100% free of any drug habit in order to hold a specific tenancy. The reality was that his drug habit was demonstrated over many months – despite it being at a low level - using hair strand analysis.

The subject didn’t realise that the sensitivity thresholds for analysis are extremely low, and that it is possible to state from analytical results which drugs were taken, when, together with – even – the type of cocaine and where in the world it originated from.
